How to playPress Start and type the Python snippet exactly as shown — every bracket, colon and space. Correct characters turn green, mistakes turn red. When you finish you get your speed in words per minute (WPM) and accuracy; pick Easy, Medium or Hard for longer multi-line code.
How to play
- Choose a level. Easy is single lines; Medium adds loops and blocks; Hard is whole functions and classes.
- Press Start. The timer begins with your first key press.
- Type exactly. Match every character. After Enter, the next line's indentation is filled in for you.
- Beat your best. Your best WPM per level is saved in this browser.
Why practise typing code?
Programmers type a lot of characters that ordinary typing tests never use: ( ) [ ] { } : _ = " '. Hunting for them breaks your concentration, and typos in them cause syntax errors. A few minutes a day of typing real Python builds muscle memory for the symbols and, as a bonus, drills the shape of common patterns — for i in range(...), if __name__ == "__main__":, f-strings and list comprehensions.
How WPM is calculated
Like standard typing tests, one "word" is five characters (including spaces and symbols). WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Accuracy is correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes. Auto-inserted indentation doesn't count towards your speed.
Tips
- Look at the code, not your hands — the red highlight tells you when you slip.
- Learn where the symbols are: on US keyboards
( )are Shift+9/0,_is Shift+minus,:is Shift+semicolon. - Accuracy first: speed follows. 95%+ accuracy is a good target.
Once the syntax feels natural, put it to work in the exercises.
Frequently asked questions
What's a good typing speed for programmers?
Around 40–60 WPM on code is comfortable; code is slower than prose because of symbols. Accuracy matters more than raw speed.
Is this good typing practice for kids learning Python?
Yes. The Easy level uses short, readable lines and helps kids get familiar with Python syntax while they practise typing.
Does it work on a phone?
It works with any keyboard, but it's designed for a physical keyboard — on-screen keyboards make symbols slow.
Are the snippets real Python?
Yes. Every snippet is valid Python syntax, checked automatically before each release.
